I wrote this book because I was researching Viking lore
and became deeply intrigued by Loki, the Norse god who
will one day bring the end of the world. I decided I'd
like to see Loki try to do that-- what would the gods
do, especially in the eleventh century, when those old
gods aren't really being worshipped anymore? Would they
care if Loki came to end the earth? This was a really
fun book, but it takes a hard look at those magnificent
bastards, the Vikings. It also is yet another step along
the development of MacDuff, who still searches for his
cosmic role.

| Incidentally, although MacDuff
remains a Christian, readers have noticed that the
closest thing to a final God in the MacDuff saga so far
is Uror, or Susan, the First Sister -- and from the way
she appears in this book, being what amounts to the
Universal Administrator is a thankless task. Susan's
fun. She doesn't appear in The Darkling Band,
but I miss her. |
